I asked an Orthodox Priest for his top recommended books on Orthodox Christianity。 He told me this wasn’t a book on Orthodox Christianity, it was an Orthodox book。 Indeed it is。 A wonderful Orthodox book of wisdom and spirituality。

I finished this book while I was visiting my friend at Sibley Hospital。 I especially enjoyed the beginning half of the book that described the life, actions, and prayer life of Staretz Silouan。 I liked Fr。 Sophrony's explanations of doctrine and explanations of spiritual disciplines, but I found stories of Fr。 Silouan and his life more compelling than the commentary。 I finished this book while I was visiting my friend at Sibley Hospital。 I especially enjoyed the beginning half of the book that described the life, actions, and prayer life of Staretz Silouan。 I liked Fr。 Sophrony's explanations of doctrine and explanations of spiritual disciplines, but I found stories of Fr。 Silouan and his life more compelling than the commentary。 。。。more

This year the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America did a Lenten book study online and this was the selected book。 I was late in registering so I never got to follow along with the discussion, but since I did already have the book I decided to read it on my own anyway。 Here are a few gems that really struck a chord:"Most people neither hear nor understand God speaking in their hearts : they listen to the urging of passion which inhabits the soul and with its clamor drowns the still small voice o This year the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America did a Lenten book study online and this was the selected book。 I was late in registering so I never got to follow along with the discussion, but since I did already have the book I decided to read it on my own anyway。 Here are a few gems that really struck a chord:"Most people neither hear nor understand God speaking in their hearts : they listen to the urging of passion which inhabits the soul and with its clamor drowns the still small voice of God。" (p。 52)"Good is not attained by evil means and the end does not justify the means。 Good not obtained by good means it is not good。 Although good frequently triumphs and by its appearance rectifies evil this does not mean that evil has led to good, that good has come out of evil。 That is impossible。" (p。 62)"Many of us cannot, or do not want to, accept and suffer of our own free will the consequences of Adam's original sin。 We protest, 'I am ready to answer for my own sins but certainly not for the sins of others。' We do not realize that that in arguing this we are repeating within ourselves the sin of Adam, leading to our own personal fall。 Adam denied responsibility, laying all the blame on Eve and on God who had given him this wife。" (p。 63)"At first sight there seems to be nothing wrong about an intrusive thought, but soon it diverts the mind from prayer and then stirs up confusion。" (p。 105)While I did get a lot out of the book, I most likely would have gotten more out of it had I joined the discussion board。 I'm curious about what areas they discussed and what sections they dissected。 Next year I'll be sure to join in time。 。。。more
